It's perfectly safe as long as you don't make some classic mistakes, like taking taxi's alone in BA late at night to some suburbs, or taking an offered taxi in Copacobana in Bolivia.

In 2 months a nice route to travel is from Buenos Aires to Iguazu, than on to Salta, crossing into Bolivia. To La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Cuzco/Machu Picchu. From there going south to Arequipa/Colca Canyon and on to Northern Chile, ending up in Santiago.
Although maybe it's to short to see a everything of course.
You can also go from Salta to San Pedro in northern Chile, spend a few days over there exploring the Atacama desert and surrounding altiplano. From San Pedro you can do a trip to Uyuni, about 3 days. From there go north again and end up in Lima.
Probably this gives you more time in several places.
1 week buenos aires
1 week to Iguazu and on to salta
1 week around salta
2 weeks from Salta to San Pedro to Uyuni.
3 weeks to La Paz, Cuzco, Lima.

Have fun, Michael.

I concur with Utrecht's tips and remarks. Season-wise, since you're going in SA winter, it's not a good plan to go all the way south in Argentina and Chile; better stay up north, where temperatures are still somewhat agreeable.

Also, consider buying an open jaw instead of a return ticket; it allows for more flexibility, as you're not obliged to take a round trip. The itinerary below is just a suggestion; there's obviously many alternatives, contact me if you want to discuss them.

Fly into BsAs - Cordoba - Mendoza - Santiago de Chile - northern Chile (no suggestions) - San Pedro de Atacama / Atacama desert - Uyuni - Jujuy (Argentina) - Tucumán - Iguazu - Asuncion (Paraguay; not on your list, but on your route anyway) - Salta - Sucre - Potosí - La Paz - Yungas valley - lake Titicaca / Copacabana - Puno - Cusco / Machu Picchu - Arequipa - Lima

It's a bit messy in the Argentinian northwest, but you really don't want to miss out on Iguazu :)

have fun, Niels

Very similar suggestion:

BsAs-Pto. Iguazu-Salta-Jujuy-San Pedro de Atacama-Uyuni-Potosi-La Paz-Copacabana (Titicaca Lake)Puno-Cusco (Machu Picchu)-Arequipa-Nazca-Lima.

Good luck!
