I'm planning to leave for australia (sidney) in august 2007. I think i'll do this ozintro thing at first to meet some people (since i go there alone :(), then stay in sydney for two months or so and work (or should i travel at first? i don't have that much money), but i don't know what to do afterwards. Should i plan everything (when to go where) before i go or should i decide what to do/where to go next once i've arrived and met some people?
i want to travel all around australia (in 10 months, maybe a year), so i have plenty of time. would you first go north or south (depending on the weather)?
thanks for your help, it's my first (really) big trip, i'm kinda lost!

Plan everything (globally), and expect those plans to change weekly.
That is, always try to have a reasonable idea of what to do next, some basic plan of action to fall back on if/when you're in a slump or don't have time to do new research - but be very flexible with this plan and be fully open to circumstances changing it radically.

I think August is a bad time of year to look for work in Sydney (lots of people ending the school year and all arriving in Sydney), but on the other hand, the months leading up to Christmas can be bad, too. So, do spend some time looking - just if after the first 2-3 weeks you haven't found anything, go try somewhere else (or change your approach / the type of work you're looking for).

You'll want to not be north between December and March (the wet season), so you have the choice to either go there straight away, or to wait until the end of your time in the country.

It should be pretty easy to find work - theres a labor shortage in Australia at the moment. Jobs in cafes & restaurants are always pretty easy to pick up especially if you can work anytime.

I'd work first, if you haven't got much money it's better to build up a travel fund. It'll also give you the oppertunity to have a look around locally, gather advice from locals and meet new people.

Hey, iv been in oz for 3 weeks now, i spent ages making plans, what i was going to do, where i was going to go, when i was going to get a job. All my plans changed within a week of being here. Its good to have plans but dont count on sticking to them. I did ozintro in my first week, get it done, i would have been lost with out it. I came out here on my own and now have some really good friends to travel with. Its well worth the money and the hostle is brill im still staying in it, its loads of fun. Good luck planning your trip, if you have any more question give us a shout.
