I suggest Genting Highland. It has lots of fun. You will have chance to travel by cable-car. which is the longest in SEA.
On the way from Kuala Lumpur to Genting, u can also visit Batu Cave. But actually, I don't find Batu Cave interesting

If you have the chance, take the jungle train from Kota Bahru to Kuala Lumpur (or vice versa) - it takes around 12 hours and you'll see some magnificent scenery.

I particularly enjoyed:

Cameron Highlands - nice and cool, get away from the sticky heat - very nice landscape of hills covered in tea plantations.

Taman Negara - see a bit of rainforest.

Melaka - worth a day and a night, some interesting historical stuff, nice little chinatown and some great food. Some find it a bit dull, but I really liked it!

it really depends on how many days you are spending, and what you are looking for,.

Penang - Lay back, food & shopping. Penang hills for little trekking (rather walking). lazy around the beach (forgot the name).

Kota Bharu/Trengganu - Gateway to islands like Pulau Perhentian and Redang. Many european spent months in these islands in summer. Dirt cheap accomodation. Good water for snorkerling/diving.

Taman Negara (I think in state of Pahang, but you could get there from KL) - One of oldest protected rainforest. If you like wilderness, enjoying jungle trekking. the 2hrs boat ride into the park itselft is a highlight.

KL - city. little different from other cities in Asia. Many interesting stuffs around. (guess some been highlighted).

Melaka - Known for the Portugese settlement. Historical town.

If you like outdoor, suggest to East Peninsular Malaysia
Sabah - Mount KK, or some divings
Sarawak - Mulu to see the biggest single cave chamber in the world. (size of fitting several 747)

I think Tamen Negara is really good, but take advantage of the leech spray they sell there, I was attacked by a mini leech army and it was messy....

Also, Kuala Selangor is a few hours by bus outside of KL, whilst there isn't anything in the town itself, at night you can take a boat along the river and there are millions of fireflies. really amazing to see.
