Hello again!

I have read somewhere that it is cheaper to hire a car and travel in a South to North direction i.e. Wellington to Auckland instead of vice versa - does anybody know if this is generally true?

I don't think you'll easily be able to find car rental companies giving general discounts for travelling in that direction (I tried online quotes at both hertz and europcar for wellington-auckland and christchurch-auckland and vice versa, and direction didn't change the quote), although they do often have very cheap rates for "relocations" going that way (but then you have a time limit of two or three days for bringing the car to its destination, and usually relocations are only available at the last moment).

Depending on how long you're there it may be cheaper to buy a car. We bought one at the car auction in Christchurch, then drove it all over and took it back to the same auction company in Auckland and lost very little on it considering how much mileage we racked up, and the damage done when a goat tried to jump through our window, but that's a different story....Otherwise there are always heaps of cars advertised in the hostels at either end for a few hundred dollars. I'm wary of renting cars as if you have a bump you are liable for the costs which can be really excessive, whereas if you bump your own old banger, the worst that happens is you don't get as much on resale as you hoped.

yeah - some rental car companys offer relocations deals at like $1 a day or something just as minimal and they usually from south to north but like someone mentioned above they are last minute so i wouldnt rely on this. Renting a car I wouldnt say is the cheapest way to do things if your hitting the major cities as you can get pretty cheap buses, trains etc. And petrol is expensive. Although if your spending the pound i guess its not as bad for you. Having a car is obviously the better option if you just want to drive and see where you end up - this can be a much better holiday and you can also take your time and not be stuck to a schedule!!
Whatever you decide - enjoy yourself!!!
