Sorry to hear that Hannah... but I've played, shopped, stayed, transits through Singapore all my life and never had an experience even close to what you went through there! Singapore is one of the best cities in the world! Contrary to your experience... You can choose hotels from the cheapest as low as US$10 to even the most expensive ones! I take taxis all the time after midnight there, never they cheated me, even to a single dime, they always try giving me back my change to even a single dime but I always insist on them to keep it... The greatest transit system, even better than where I come from, which is America, the greatest country in the world! Love the people, they're always helpful and friendly with that Singaporean smile, and the foods are awesome... eventhough I sometimes choose Burger King on my busy days! But Singapore is still one of the best country, and I would recommend anyone to definitely go there... YOU can even get maps and books on things to do in Singapore for free! Not like any other country in the world!

sorry to hear about your terrible trip.I have been there for only two days three years ago,and didn't find anything interesting.for Chinese,Singapore is much more like a city in China,it is too small, and noisy.I would rather stay in a small town of my country than go there.
forget it!Have a good trip in Thailand.

well what a bizaare experiance you had, such a shame..
singapore is one my fave places on the planet, its so clean and i didnt find the people to be rude in any way. its a little strange around the little india area but far nicer in chinatown.
used one taxi driver to take us to the airport, no probs there, he was nice and chatty enough but as other people have said taxi drivers world over are always trying to have people over, even where i live in england...
the mrt is more than efficient though for getting to/from places unless you arrive at the airport in the middle of the night in which case the trains are not running.
i didnt have a problem with the food, ate both western and local dishes, infact some of the best food ive had in the last 12 months has been in singapore.
theres lots of things to do to keep amused in spore, i guess what it had to offer just didnt do it for you...
queueing in asia doesnt exist, most people push in front to get served first and as for them being unfriendly well i think thats just a city thing, london is one of the unfriendliest places ive been to so singapore seemed rather pleasant, i also felt very safe.

thai people are nice yes, but they will rip you off quicker than any singaporean espesh the cab drivers!
anyways enjoy the rest of your hols!

Are you sure you were in Singapore?!? That sounds like Shanghai!

Yeah I agree with Ellyse.

I thought your critisiscm of Singapore was fairly harsh.
I have to say it certainly isn't my favourite city in the world, bit too clinical, but hey that is what gets some people in.
It is incredibly safe for lone female travellers and so easy to get around.
Maybe not so many things to do if you are not into shopping, but hell for a stopover for a day or 3 it is fine.
Food is great. Getting ripped off, well that will happen anywhere in the world and it is part travelling in foreign countries.
You were right about the zoo. It is fantastic, and worth spending the day there.
Singapore - Polluted, smelly rude people???????. I think you were really having a bad hair week.
If you dare delve any further into Asia I hope you have your face mask, and your anti-bacterial wipes to save you from having a cardiac arrest......

I think the overwhelming response to this thread demonstrates that the majority of visitors find Singapore to be an interesting and worthwhile place to visit. I have to say, I didn't share any of your negative experiences - even the taxi drivers varied from OK to friendly. Anybody reading this thread - don't be put off from spending a few days in Singapore!

Sorry to hear that you had a bad time! I must say though after having read about the series of events that made it a bad experience, that I think you have just been very unfortunate. All of the things you have experienced can happen in any country you visit. I went travelling around Europe a few years back and had a similar really bad time in Rome. However I think it's important that you try to see beyond that even though it is hard when you're in it. I haven't been to Singapore yet, will be going there when i finish off the 7 months trip I start in February. I think you should try to go back there some day, and you might find that you really like the place! ;)

I used to feel that singapore was extremely lousy, but after travelling extensively thru-out Asia,I could kiss the floor in appreciation upon touching down in Changi Airport.

Singapore, being a tiny island with over-population, to some, might be too sterile, extremely strict and too systematic. Just like many city-dwellers elsewhere, efficiency and ability to focus every drop of one's energy to climb the corperate ladder, means that they pay less attention to smile and welcome foreigners.

It's not the best city, period. I'm sure it'll not be in the bottom list.

It can be very boring if you stay more than 3 days on a tiny concrete island. But I'm sure the availability of a wide variety of food is one of the strong point, although taste-wise, Thai's better.

It's surely a safer city to visit even for a lone female, without fearing/risking of being stalked, mugged, robbed and brutely gang-raped like in most home countries.

Heh... I'd rather stay at travel in China rather than go home to Singapore any more than once a year, if only to see friends (and family). And also because my Singapore handphone line can't be suspended for any more than 1 year in one go!

I feel you. I was stuck there for 6 whole weeks because I was studying and my faculty paid for the trip...

After about day 4, I was crying to leave...!!!

I was ripped off countless times by taxi drivers....especially later at night....they often purposely take longer routes. But since I was never sure when I'm in the cab, I dont say anything...

And wait until you have to deal with the administrative side of things!! Every process was unnecessarily long and oftentimes purpose-less. People are so up-tight about following rules (although I do feel sorry for them as they were brought up this way) that they dont know how to take short-cuts or be more creative because that isnt looked upon positively there.

The two things I hated most there were the way men openly stare at you and the weather.

Oh and Sentosa Island is the most over-rated ugly and dirty place ever.

I'm harsh too I know.....but I only remember being constantly angry and upset at everything in my six weeks there. And then along with all that, I have carried a bug I somehow got from the food there for the last six months which has been causing me the worst pains ever.
