Bangkok is a place where one could totally loose oneself due to overwhelm pleasures.

You get the occasional mention of Japan... I always notice because i'm living in Japan. Basically, there's a lot more english in Bangkok and it's a lot cheaper than Japan. And hell, there's a lot of cool things there.
I love Japan... I've lived here for 2 years... but travel is expensive. It's cheaper for me to fly to another country and spend a week than it is to fly domestic and spend a week.
I am an American ex-pat living in Bangkok. The city is alot of fun and yes I do believe either you love it or hate it. To me the best thing about the city is the people who live here. There is so much to do and all of it, well most of it, can be done on a budget. If you are into partying it is definately alot of fun, but traffic is insane and for a 10 million-plus city the last call is ridiculously timed to 2am. Great place to visit, even better to live.
Japan is hell expensive and that is probably the main reason most people go to Bangkok instead of Japan. Bangkok is a really nice city to visit especially if you explore the place properly, although being there on the day the water festival is on can be a bit of a nightmare if you don't like the thought of having a huge 24gallon drum of water lifted up by a few people and dumped on you despite the fact you have your digital camera and day pack with you.
Japan is extremely beautiful, but if it is at all possible, you should try and go when the cherry blossoms are on, because that is a fantastic time of the year to visit despite the weather being not that warm. If you love photography, not much beats Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The people in Japan are far less pushy than the people in Bangkok, English is a lot less widely spoken than in Bangkok (you struggle to find anyone speaking more than a handful of words). You are also far less likely to have someone try and con you in Japan than you are in Bangkok.
I think that the guy who reckons Bangkok is the worst place he has been to, was either stoned off his head, or very drunk when making the post. Unless of course Vietnam, Bangkok and other places in Thailand are the only places outside of Israel he has been to in which case I still find it hard to believe that he could enjoy Hanoi or Saigon in Vietnam more than Bangkok.

I have to agree that Bangkok can be quite overwhelming, but I find that there are many people who speak English. Perhaps it's because I live here and my girlfriend is Thai, but that's my perception. As far as being con-ed is concerned, I think you certainly can find trouble in Bangkok if you are looking for it. Thai taxi drivers and tuk-tuk drivers can be a bit pushy, but if you know where you want to go and make it known they generally are accomodating. I would say that if you are drunk in Nana Plaza, Kho San, Pat Pong, etc. your likelihood of getting ripped off goes up meteorically. I find Bangkok more safe than any other big city I have lived in back in the States and routinely walk late at night without thinking twice about it.
i had the same question before, but after my sister went I want to go too. i'm already planning a trip for this Spring.
i believe it's because everything there is cheap. you could buy a thai silk dress for less than $2. there's good food almost everywhere. plus you could go almost anywhere in thailand from Bangkok.
The first time I set foot in Bangkok I absolutely hated it, couldn't wait to leave. Then by the end of the trip I couldn't wait to get back there and when i did I loved it because you are used to the craziness and way of life there.
As long as you give as good as you get when getting approached by people in the street you can have a laugh - like people coming up to you "hey man you want a suit we got the best suits in bangkok" you reply "no thanks mate I've got the best suit in the world already" with a smile on your face people joke with you and there's nothing unpleasant about it!
Go there and enjoy yourself - after the initial shock you will have a wail of a time
Yeah i was wondering the same thing I'm going there this year on my round the world trip but only stopping for two nights the friend I'm going with has been there and she said its not that great, she said its good for shopping though and food , plus its pretty cheap there! I think not many people go to Japan cause its so expensive there??? Well thats what i heard
First of all... JAPAN is EXPENSIVE...
Bangkok in the other hand... ANYTHING GOES!!!
What I mean by ANYTHING, I MEAN ANYTHING!!!
So... there you have it!!! Hope to see u soon in Bangkok buddy...
Staying in America too long is not recommended, trust me!!!
Coz Bangkok and in general Thailand is one of the best place on earth for a holiday....
