I have just come back from a couple of nights in Daugavpils in Latvia. It is an interesting country and quite a bit different to western europe. It had the feel of the old soviet about it as it used to be part of russia. The people there were all very friendly and the beer is very cheap. I expect you will be visiting Riga which is apparently a lot different as it is the capital and a lot more tourists go there, but I have heard that it is a great city. I would recommend that you go, but to be honest I would recommend that you go everywhere in the world as travel, wherever it is you go, is good for you!!!

I have spent some days in Riga. It was really great. People are very friendly and helpful. Maybe you coudn´t expext the same standards in hotels like in Western Europe, but at the end it´s ok.

In Riga are lots of bars where you can meet young people from Latvia to talk and have a beer together.

Enjoy your time. :)

I spent some time in Riga, and their was some things to do, but I wouldn't count on your days being extremely occupied for a full week in Riga, but you could go and see some of the countryside. With that hostel you mentioned, I can remember turning up there, and they would only take people who had prior reservations and wouldn't deal with doing a reservation over the speaker on the door that you needed to speak in to before you were allowed in. Riga hostel was a pretty good and very social hostel and also fairly cheap, but not as cheap as that one with the stupid name that you are talking about.

I was in Riga for 3 days earlier in the year, and whilst it was an interesting place I think I would have had trouble further occupying my time there - you might be best off combining it with a trip out to the country if you're going for a week.
