Hi there!

Has anyone had luck getting their travel photos published anywhere? I was just living in the Philippines for a year and have some great photos, but I would like to know what magazines might be interested in publishing them (hopefully with compensation!). Any ideas????

BTW, I didn't mean to choose "USA" - even though that's where I am living now. I really wouldn't care which country I could get my photos published in!

Hi Ethno,

what film did you use to take your pictures? The preferred type is Slide for colour and Print for Black and white. If you have prints it would be very difficult to sell them, unless you really have unique pictures.
But nonetheless, there are two ways to try and sell your pics. The easy and the hard way.
The easy way is to put together a selection of your best pictures and look for a stock agency. They will let you know if they are interested in any pictures and include them in their catalogue. And if you're lucky and somebody buys the reproduction right the agent will contact you and you'll get the agreed share of the sale. Usually this is somewhere around 50% and 70%. At the moment I couldn't give you any recommendations about which agency to choose, but there are loads around. Shop around and compare what they are offering, if they want exclusive rights or if you could use another agency as well.

Now the hard way:
This involves trawling through magazines looking for what kind of pictures they feature and comparing them to what you have got. If you found a magazine that might be interested you'd have to put together a submission with a cover letter and send it off to the Editor. And then wait for a reply.
This is very difficult and time consuming, but if you want to get into Freelance this is the best way to learn. If you just want to try to sell your pics without hassle use an agency.

I hope this helps.

If you need any more info gimme a shout.

One of my photos is due to be published in a forthcoming publication by the Library of Photography. I submitted the photo to a contest at http://www.picture.comsometime ago. Then recently I received a letter in the mail saying that it had been selected as a semi finalist for the contest and also had been selected for publication in an anthology.

Infor about the contest can be found at the above website. Maybe I wont win the contest but being published is a big thing for me. At least I'll get some exposure and hopefully one of these days I will get a magazine to pay to use some of my pics.

Here's the link to the photo I entered in the contest:

Hope this helps.

Amicia... the next letter you'll get from will be one telling you that you can buy a book with your photo in it. That's what happened to my ex-BF and I. First I sent a pic he'd taken to them:

and then a pic that I'd taken to them:

and both times we got the generic letters firstly saying that we were in the semi-final, and then to buy the book.

Your photo is great by the way. But just beware of the intentions of certain web sites... "the fine print", or the up-sell...

Luck is a big part of it. Ok i have some publications but it's not so easy to say what you have to do for it.

Your best change is to get your photo's represented with a stockagent. All my agents i use only accept digital so you need to have a good digital file or be able to create a high quality file.

And then it's up to luck. So make sure your work is special.

I've seen various photography contests on the local newspaper where you submit the photo and basically wait for a reply. The local newspaper in my city (Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA) is the Sun-Sentinel but also you can check out "The Miami Herald". I usually see it in the travel section.

Ah I forgot...the New York Times also has contests and in most of the websites there is always a section called..."this week in pictures". I am not sure if it is compensated though. Here are the links to the newspapers I mentioned...
