it seems so expensive.. isn't it only an hour away? why is it $60 for the two of us? should we wait until we arrive and scout out something cheaper? or is that the going price? we are staying at Heart beat. Do they do pick up? is there a local bus.. or is that crazy packed?

Next time you start a thread, please make clear what country your question relates to... :)

For everyone else curious, and who wasn't able to tell at first sight, Negril apparently is Jamaica

Hey Hiedi - unlike the US and C & S. American countries, Jamaica does not have a bus service like city buses or Greyhound to get you from town to town. Kingston does have it's own public transportation, but MoBay and Negril do not. Residents either drive, bike or walk to their destinations and many have never been out of their own town or village. Negril is not very big either.

With that said, your best bet for transportation from MoBay to Negril is the Juta bus system (Jamaica Union for Travellers Association). The minivan type vehicles will be all around the airport exits. Were you quoted the $30/person price through Heartbeat?? It is a reasonable price even though Negril is just about 1-1.5 hours away - depending on traffic and number of goats standing in the road. (I am not joking about the goats.) You can contact JUTA via their online website.

Juta Tours Negril Chapter

They have tour and taxi service information on their site and online bookings.

Be very wary of taxis willing to take you to Negril. All taxis are independents and may quote a low price to Negril, then try to extract a much larger fee once you have been delivered to your hotel. It is a very common practice. It can also take longer via private taxi as they like to take you on a tour of the surrounding area and stop at friend's shops along the way - hoping to (again) up the payment.

I recommend arranging transportation through Heartbeat or through JUTA directly. They are the safest and best bet on the island, and $30 is not that expensive for Jamaica.

You're getting it cheap at $60US for 2. Mine was $60US for 1 and it is only 76km away. According to the taxi booth thing at Montego Bay airport, $60US was the going rate from Montego Bay-Negril for 1-4 people back in August this year so it is probably still the same. By Jamaican standards that is cheap, because for the most part, budget accommodation is very expensive even for crappy quality places. A small day tour in Jamaica from Montego Bay-Dunns River Falls (a must see while in Jamaica) costs $50US and that doesn't even include the lunch which they take you to and that cost $15US for an all you can eat and all you can drink (alcoholic beverages as well) banquet in a very basic restaurant with not too nice food.

Hope you enjoy being harrassed by drug dealers, because you can not get away from it in Negril anywhere and I mean anywhere. It isn't easy to avoid it in most other places in Jamaica either, but it is at its worst in Negril. I reckon if you went scuba diving you'd have hustlers trying to either sell you drugs or sell you prostitutes. I even went about 150 metres out in to the ocean (a long way past the red markers saying where it is safe for swimming), and I had a guy come past on a jet ski asking if I wanted to buy cocaine. If you can look past the hustlers selling drugs and prostitutes that are 99 out of every 100 males living in Jamaica, well Negril is really nice especially the beach on a clear night where the sunset has the sun melting in to the water.
