Travel Forums Asia Advice on my upcoming Asia Trip?...

Hi all!

I'm planning a trip to SouthEast Asia in March of this year through Cathay Pacific's All Asia Pass. I have 30 days to travel and I'm trying to decide on where to visit and for how long.

I'm basically looking for good treks/hikes, beautiful beaches, cultural/historical landmarks and a fairly lively nightlife (with travellers around my own age, 26). And obviously not all of the aforementioned necessarily have to be in the same place/country.

I have it narrowed down to the following cities:

-Bangkok or Phuket, Thailand
-Cebu or Manila, Phillipines
-Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
-Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu or Penang, Malaysia
-Phnom Penh, Cambodia

I have 30 days to travel and I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend it. I'd really like to spend a week in Vietnam and a week in Thailand, other than that I'm completely up in the air.

Any suggestions on accomodations, bars, transport, "things i should absolutely not miss!"?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi gfonseca,

from Phnom Penh its a quick pop over to SIem Reap and the temples of Angkor, and if you have not been there, i think its definitely worth a visit.

My past itenary was from Hanoi to HCMC to Phnom Penh, SIem Reap then up to Stung Treng then Laos, from there to Thailand and bus-ed down to Phuket and Alor Setar, from which i made my way to KL, Malacca, Johor and ended up in SINgapore. From Singapore its easy to make yr way by ferry to INdonesia... Hope this helped...

WOW, that Cathay Pacific All Asia Pass I never knew about that shit! Checking into that now, I am interested in doing something like that aswell

But, so you know, I'd highly suggest Phuket & Pattaya both, Pattaya is great for the beaches and the nightlife, Phuket more for the beaches and the resort life, I personally thought Phuket nightlife kind of sucked pretty badly. And BKK is a BIG city so it is great, has anything and everything you want/need (tourist stuff, nightlife, food, etc etc)

I live in Cebu, so I see a LOT of there and Manila aswell, Cebu is pretty neat place, VERY cheap place, Manila nightlife sucks on the weekdays in my opinion, LOTS of the cool bars/clubs are closed on the weekdays

Hope this helps

Here are my suggestions:

Go to Cebu instead of Manila. I haven't been to Cebu, but I lived in Manila for 20 years. Unless you're going outside of Manila there really is nothing to see there. Yes, there is quite a night life, but I think they also have the same thing in Cebu. At least in Cebu, you could easily go to the beach. Although my sister wasn't too happy with the beach as it was very shallow when she last visited. Have you considered going to Bohol?

Bangkok in my opinion is a place mainly for shopping. I'm going there too a few months from now, but mainly just to shop. Although, if you want to see a lot of temples you might want to visit Phetchaburi. It's close to Bangkok. You might want to spend a lot more time in Thailand as there are a lot more places to see. Plus most of the provinces are accessible by train or by bus.

I'd much rather go to Siem Reap than Phnom Pehn. You could satisfy your "hunger" for culture here by visiting all the temples.

I haven't been to Malaysia. A friend said they have caves in Kota Kinabalu. Not very sure, since I haven't researched on that.

At any case, maybe you could go trekking/spelunking in Malaysia, raiding temples in Siem Reap, snorkelling in Phuket, sunbathing in Cebu and partying in Bangkok.
