Having just returned from five months in Thailand/Laos, I cant wait to get away again and am beginning to plan my next trip for april/may. Im planning to be away for 4months and at the moment thinking about Honduras. Just wondering what people would recommend in Central America and what people think/thought of Honduras. Any views or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Dave

After the richness and variety in Asia you'll be let down hard by Central America.

For the amount of time you have I'd say South America would be a much better choice-for a number of reasons not the least of which is the food.

What's on offer in CA is generally dreadful and often worse-Honduras probably being the worst of all.

Partly agree with Sam.
South America has a lot to offer, but if you want to visit Central America, be aware of the fact that Guatemala and Honduras in particular are relatively dangerous countries. I heard of really a lot of people being robbed over there. Just don't travel at night, if you want to reduce risks. Of course, lots of people are ok, but compared to other countries there are some risks.
Probably a much better choice would be costa rica, maybe in combination with Panama and/or Nicaragua.
Have fun, Michael.

I did Belize to Costa Rica in 3 1/2 months and was travelling alone from Honduras to Costa Rica. Althought dangerous countries, i found people to be very friendly, you just have to be careful especially at night. As a general rule, better do your travelling by day. I never felt in danger in Central America. I do speak spanish which made it easier because some parts they hardly speak english but i think that makes travelling more fun ...and Central America is easily done in 4 months.

I never felt in danger in Central America and i actually had a great time apart maybe Honduras because in all fairness there wasnt any tourist there so everytime i wanted to do an activity it was cancel for lack of people.

My favourites were Guatemala and Costa Rica even if in Costa Rica there was lots of tourists, the country has so much to offer. There is also lots of theft in Costa Rica and from my experience lots more there than anywhere else. Not sure if its because there is more tourists so the proportion go higher of course.

not sure if you're into surfing but good spots are all over central america ... i heard El Salvador & Costa Rica being the best.

Have fun,

I only did a week in Honduras in Roatan, but I liked it. It is less touristed than the Yucutan in Mexico or Costa Rica. The diving and snorkeling is really good in Roatan.

I've been to both Central and South America, and while I can understand what SamSalmon is saying regarding Central America, I don't think I agree. Central America does not have much in the way of culture, but they do have some amazing nature to see, and the Mayan ruins are very impressive. The beaches are very nice. Other than in the big cities, I've never felt really unsafe. And even in the big cities, if you keep your wits about you, I think you'll usually be okay.
