Hello,

I am off to South America in a week! Buenos Aires sounds like a really cool city so I'm thinking I'll spend 3-4 weeks there. I want to find a nice, fun, friendly, helpful hostel to stay in. Have searched through the threads but there aren't that many suggestions. Has anyone heard of/stayed at Hostel Nomade in San Telmo? I'd like to stay in San Telmo or Palermo. I'd also love to learn how to tango whilst there - or at least attempt it!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Zoe

Nomades is good value; cheap, friendly staff, plus they organise many (albeit rather touristy) activities. Their bunks are REALLY lousy, though, so if you're on the heavy side, I'd recommend going elsewhere :)

200 meters further up Carlos Calvo, there is the hostal de San Telmo, which is slightly dirty-ish and only has large dorms, but the owner, Frida, is friendly and it used to be the cheapest place in town. Plus it has decent laundry service.

In neither place I found the crowd particularly attractive, though; young kids, many israelis and aussies, party folk. Made some good friends in Girasol (somewhere up in Palermo, but much more expensive; same price, but in Dollars instead of Pesos); also, hostel Gardel (again on Carlos Calvo, in between nomades and San Telmo) is nice-ish, although the staff isn't very friendly.
