Is Pattaya worth a visit? I have 4 days and nights to spend nearby Bangkok. Is there enough to do in 4 days? Obviously i'm happy to spend the days on the beach, but it'd be nice to have the option to do something different on impulse.

If you're there for 4 days you may as well go to Pattaya just to experience it. If you're there over a weekend you mustn't miss the Chatuchak market down at Mo Chit, at the end of the skytrain - it is brilliant and you could quite easily spend a day getting lost there.
You can easily get to pattaya from the city though so just see what other people you meet are doing there and do what you feel like doing! But yeah, there's no reason not to go to Pattaya.
I know this probably hasn't helped you much but those are my thoughts anyway

Pattaya has especially been known for its sex tourism, so it probably depends on how you want to spend your time. Koh Chang is as well near Bangkok (5 hours or so to get there, daily buses from Khao San Road) and has beautiful beaches and a good vibe...

Pattaya is easy to get to and just as easy to leave if you don't like it - and it's not that far from Bangkok. From the Ekamai bus station the VIP bus is only around 120 baht and the ride takes 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
If you need any hotel recommendations don't to mention how much you want to spend per night. There are lots of cheap hotels in Pattaya, usually much cheaper than Bangkok. Like Bangkok, the travel agencies will have a list of available tours you can sign up for.
Besides the bars that get mentioned all the time, there are new modern malls, movie theaters showing cheap current releases, street markets, lots of small shops and vendors and decent inexpensive restaurants. All wrapped together by cheap transportation by baht bus (10 baht.)
Pattaya beach is mostly good for walking and gawking, lots of cheap beach chairs to rent and bars and restaurants. For beach type swimming go to nearby Jomtien. Many hotels have pools, even some cheap places in the 500 or 600 baht range.

Like has been said Pattaya's famed for it's sex tourisim but also has a better side to it away from walking street and beach road. A pretty dodgy place for the unwary though with more than it's fair share of tourist muggings, druggings and murders (sorry suicides !!!) Check out the local papers online. If going into clubs on walking street or on the sois off beach road watch for the prices.
I do not think Pattaya is very dangerous, just use your common sense...but if you are not a middle aged European or American male I thinks the place has little appeal!
The only thing you need to be careful about is the working girls.. A percentage (large or small in not certain) can be kinda crazy and wont be scared to rob you of your all your holiday cash that is available. I know some of my work collegues work over there with the Pattaya police and i heard all there stories. Obviously out of allll the girls in that place the chances might be rear but hey, always best to do it the safe way and get the girls ID card safely into your hotels security for the night.. But thats if your a sex tourist which in my opinion is what gives Thailand its bad reputation.
For 4 days mate i suggest Koh Chang or Koh Samet, both in reasonable distance. Hua Hin or Cha - am isnt too bad.. Hua Hin is kind of a smaller version of Pattaya but Cha-am is nice
Or just hang out in Bangkok, people hate it but i truly fell in love after i got use to it. Full of classy and shitty bars, markets and shopping malls plus the food... oh my god the food is amazing. Khoa san is a hole but its cheap and easily acessible
