Actually, thinking about it a little more. If you fancied splashing out just a bit more then Portico 21 hotel is a great little find. This is a small hotel just a stones throw away from Thapae Gate (a centre point for events, shopping and eating options in Chiang Mai). The rooms are ultra modern, clean and great value for money at 1,100 baht per night (only $33).
I know it may be at the higher end of a "backpackers" budget but if you were after that little bit of extra comfort with friendly service then this place won't disappoint. I met quite a few other travellers when I stayed there last and had a great time in Chiang Mai with them.

Where is the best place for backpackers to stay at Chiang Mai?

If for me,i will choose Bus or Train....
VIP bus is convinient and Train is safer....
Flight is faster...lol...
i think Ben Guesthouse is not bad....
Many KUAI LOU stays there as well!!!!

I can recommend Julies guesthouse - a really cool backpackers vibe there and you'll meet lots of people.
Happy travels

Hi, I was in Chiang Mai a month ago and stayed at Julie Guesthouse which was really nice, clean, cheap accomodation, a superior double room cost me 350bht per night, the food was excellent and you meet sooo many people in the chill out bit at the front, I wouldn`t stay anywhere else in Chiang Mai now, they have a website - www.julieguesthouse.com, I think!!!
