Hi, I'm planning on doing a volunteer trip this summer. I was wondering if anyone else has ever done this and if anyone has some advice. I am planning on going to Costa Rica and living with a family. I am working with an organization that is helping me arrange it. So if anyone has any stories or advice to share I would greatly appreciate it!

I actually work here for a volunteer organization - can I ask which company you are travelling with?
There is a lot of volunteer work here - you will meet many people in the same boat and doing dozens of varied projects.
I know that most projects really need the help, and they are very appreciative of what we do here.
Also it is a chance for you to immerse yourself in the local culture and living with a family will be a fantastic experience for you.
What kind of project are you hoping to do?
I wish you the best of luck - and thank you for giving up your time to volunteer in this beautiful country.

It irritates me that many companies want to charge an arm and a leg to connect volunteers with charitable organizations. I have found a website that lists charities so that they can be contacted directly if you are interested in volunteering for free or at a very low cost. If interested, you can check it out at:

Don't pay big money to volunteer via an 'agency',
these are some grass-roots volunteer programs in CR:

There is a directory of free and low-cost volunteer opportunities
in South and Central america here:
