I am having a bit of trouble locating any accommodation in New York City that looks reasonable for under US$300 per night.
Does anyone know of any good online sites or ways to cut corners and grab a deal?
Also does anyone know whether Long Island is a nice area. I have managed to find nice accommodation there in my price range butnot sure of the area and means of getting to & from times square?
Can anyone help?

Long Island could be okay, if you are right on one of the LIRR train lines. But it's still pretty far away.

Have you looked at Jersey City or Newark, New Jersey? They have PATH trains that run 24 hrs. / day into Manhattan. Prices are less, and it's only 20 minutes to New York.

I don't know what specifically you're looking for... if you're looking for luxury, I don't have any information. BUT... the Chelsea hostel has private rooms. It's well situated and fairly clean, with a kitchen and a courtyard. Super friendly for international young people, especially. I think when I stayed there I booked it through this site, the "accomodation" section. Nice to be in the city properly rather than have to commute every day. For me, it would be worth the drop in comfort. But everyone's different. Good luck!

Another alternative if you want to stay directly in Manhattan is to check the website www.hotels.com.. They have reallly good rates from time to time and well worth a look. The problem with Long Island is that you will have to pay for a train ticket each way which could rack the cost up. Staying in New Jersey near the path train is a good alternative. That only costs $2 each way.

Hotel QT looks quite funky from when I've walked by. It's in a fantastic location for tourists.. between Times Square and Rockefeller and near the Theatre District. I've read that it's under $175/night..
