Later this year I am planning a several week trip to Northern India (and a slight bit of the east). What is recomended for a guy to wear, not only to be comfortable in the heat, but also fit in with the populace?

which season? Shorts and flip flops will do good for summer
Anything that is comfortable is okay.
Loose clothes should be fine too.
And anything that is not too revealing
is not advised as they may be considered
not dignified.
There is nothing in paerticular as far is men are concerned to be wearing while in India...
However keeping in mind the time period in which you will be travelling which you did not discuss, figure out if it summers/ winters and wear clothes accordingly.
Winters in the North can be very chilling so in winters have adequate winter clothing on you.

Jeans and a T shirt should be cool.
Hi Staphano. You can best buy your clothes in India. There you will find light clothing suitable for hot weather. Its extremely cheap but don't expect quality. You can also buy at the international brands though. Lee, Reebok, Wrangler, Nike, Lacoste its all present in the 5 major cities. Much and much cheaper then in the west and same quality. I never found light clothing (like trousers) in those international brand shops. Jeans and western clothing is very popular among the cosmopolitan rich Indian people these days. Cheers

depends which month u r coming to india. and who told you that entire india is a hot place? north india freezes in nov, dec. best of luck.

Wear light cotton trouser and shirts.
Also, sandals, rather than closed shoes.
It gets so hot there.
Were exactly are u going? I have not been in the north of India, so am not sure, if it gets cold there. Maybe somebody else can comment. But where I was, it was always bloody hot.
I have not been in India, for 10 years, but when I was there, I did not see any Indian men wearing shorts, or sleeveless shirts. Therefore, I would suggest u wear long trousers, and shirts with at least short sleeves. These are also important to prevent sunburn.
