I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way that one could do work on a ship in exchange for a free trip down to SA. Do people still do this kind of thing?

yes there are still sailors offering trips like this, but they expect that you have some knowledge about sailing,so that you would be some help for them and not a burden.
Mostly it is that you have to add some money for food, gasoline, harbour costs and so on to the crew cash.
so it is not a free all inclusiv trip!

Look at sailing magazins like Cruising guide, maybe there you will find something.

Good luck,

I know that there's also possibilities to go as a passenger on board a freighter for cheaps, but I've never figured out how to. If you're interested in pursuing that, the website of the Rotterdam Port may be a good point to start, as they keep a searchable database of which company is heading which way.
