I am from the Uk and thinking of doming to US and visitng NYC, Las Vegas, LA and San Fran. I would rather drive than fly when doing the west coast but not sure about car hire.

Are the greyhound buses generally quite and are they quite regular from the cities? Do you have to buy tickets in advance?

hi, here are my experience greyhound is good and go to almost every city in the US, you can buy your ticket in advance or just before to take the bus is rare that you can not find a ticket but happened.
If you buy in advance sometimes get a discount, you can get the schedules from its website.
Regarding with the travel in the buses you have to know that this is the way which a lot of people use to move inside the US so sometimes you can see people who scares you, sorry but my english is not so smooth, so for example if I traveling with my kids and I have money to take a plane I will take a plane.
I hope I'll help you

Personally I found Greyhound to be fine. Other users have had varying experiences though, check out this thread:

I did two trips, one trip was at night and was quiet enough, the other trip was in the day and they decided to show Star Wars.

I found night travel with the Greyhound very very quiet. Actually it was so quiet that the driver fel asleep. Luckily one of the passengers noticed that we were no longer on the road and woke up the driver before the accident!
