I am planning a trip - flying into cancun and traveling south to belize and Guatemala for 20 days. Being the poor college student that I am I would like to do this trip for as cheap as possible. I will be with 2 others and we are satisfyed pretty easily. Any reccomendations on good cheap places to stay? Camping and youth hostels are great- and would work fine. Any advice, past experiences or help would be wonderful! THANKS!

Even though I am a Guide in Central America when I travel by myself I travel on the cheap, but Central America is not as "cheap" as it once was and rember mid July to early September is "high season" and often the budget lodgings are full, there are no real "youth hostels" in C.A. as in USA and Europe. From Cancun take a Bus to Chetumal, Mexico near the Belize Border and then from there to Belize City, from Belize City you may boat out to Cay Caulker Island and hang out for couple of days, then from Belize City bus it to Flores near Tikal Ruins in Guatemala(Mexico and Belize are more expensive than Guatemala), from Tikal (Flores) are express overnight buses to Guatemala City, in Guatemala City go to 18 Calle between 5-6 Avenidas in Zona 1 any City Bus marked "18 Calle" (Zone 1 Downtown) and take the local Bus to Antigua, 28 miles, 1 hour, Q5.50 70 c US, a tourist destination with dozens of cheap backpacker hotels near the Bus Station (Calzada Sta. Lucia), when In Antigua go the Rainbow Travel Center 7a Avenida Sur (South) No. 8: Bookstore, Cybercafe, Bar-Restaurant and Travel Agency, good place to meet travel companions, operated by US expat Nancy Hoffman Website: &, then if heading onto the Highlands check out Webmaster US expat Tom -snip-. The Bus to Panajachel (Lake Atitlan) "Rebuli" leaves Antigua Mon. Sat. 7am from 4a Calle Pte. (West) near the Calzada front of "Backpackers Place" Hotel 2.5 hours $3.50US 1 way Panajachel and the other lake towns offer lots of budget lodging. Returning to Cancun I would go to Puerto Barrios from Guatemala City, visit Black Garifuna town of Livingston and then take the ferry over to Belize. View (Guatemala Revue Mag) for articles and info. Happy travels. Donald Lee
