I was there in Dec 2004 (I left five days before the tsunami hit) so things may have changed since I was there. I hear Phuket is overrun by tourists and since I'd just been to Koh Samui I avoided it. Railay is a beautiful place to go but it can get expensive, especially if you stay directly on the beach. I stayed in a place called Diamond Cave Resort which was a little costly but not through the roof. Railay is nice because, although it is on the mainland it is not accessible by road, so there are no vehicles there at all. You can get there by taxi boat from either Krabi Town (45mins) or Ao Nang (15 mins).

Ao Nang is a fair sized town also in Krabi Province. It has a great beach and there are several accomodation options that will fit any budget. There are a ton of activities available. You can rent a bike and check out the surrounding area. There are countless islands around for snorkeling and hiking and anything else you want to do. There's a great pub in Ao Nang, called the Irish Rover, that's always packed with people from the UK and Ireland. I had lots of fun hanging out there during the week I spent in Ao Nang, but I imagine you're not that keen on travelling half way across the world to do what you can do in your own neighbourhood. The again, every other Brit in the area didn't seem to mind Either way, they serve a nice pint of Malaysian Guinness and they even pour a shamrock into the head (which I must admin I never saw anyone do while I was in Ireland).
