Hey,

I am just beginning the whole saving thing and have predicted about 18 months

Is it really hard? To watch what I spend for 18months will be difficult to say the least!

My girlf and i saved for 6 months solid. I worked two jobs and managed to save a modest amount. Of course, we managed to spend a lot of it very quickly but after a 12 weeks here in sydney, we have almost saved enough for the rest of our travels. Good luck and i hope travelling will be as great as it has been for me.

Me and my girlfreind plan to take

£7 to 8000 pound in total for a journey to

estimated budget
£1000 india {6weeks}
£3500 thailand\vietnam\cambodia {2 months}
£3000 New zealand on a working holiday visa {plan to work and save}
United states\la {1 to 2 weeks} £500

Would anyone say that is a sensible budget for 2 people or am i cutting a fine line ?
We will be staying in cheap budget accomodation and eating as cheap as possible.
We will not be dong any expensive activites like sky diving etc
mainly we shall travel by trains in south east asia.

Hi,
Great to hear that people are travelling for months, maybe I will do that one day as well.
But I just wondered as well: after a couple of months, doesn't the fun of travelling gets spoiled just a little bit? ...just a question....

Wouldn't it be nicer to travel for a couple of months in total each year and just working in between...
Instead of saving saving saving, travel and get back and don't travel for years?

Again, just a question....

I'm going with for 9 months with £3k, then volunteering in India for 6 months.

Last time I went, I left with pretty much nothing and lasted 3 months. I only spent £4 a day in Egypt, Jordan and Syria for a month in each place, and £5 Israel.

I spent a year saving in Ireland before I left. When I went back to work after the Christmas break on 3rd Jan 05 I said to myself "This day next year I'm not going to be here". I intially planend to leave Ireland around October and I thought that this would be enough to save but I ended up staying until Christmas and flew out on 03 Jan 2006 :)

During that year I didnt really go out much at the wknds or do anything terribly exciting. it was a bit of a quiet year. I lived at home with my parents to save on rent and bills and the only real expense I had was keeping my car on the road.

Selling my car added a nice chunk to the savings,. I left home with about 11,000 euro saved and that kept me going until just very recently. The minute it was gone I realised how valuable the euro is. I'm now earning Kiwi dollars to try and fund the rest of my trip and I'm going to have to save TWICE as hard!

For anyone leaving with the euro, british pound or the us dollar they will take you a llllllong way when you are travelling so keep putting them away now. ;)

The US Dollar isn't nearly what it used to be....wish I could earn Pounds or Euros :(
