How to get to Beijing

Travel Forums Asia How to get to Beijing

I am landing in Singapore in Sept and and planning to go to Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. I also wanted to try and get to Beijing if I could for about 5 days. I am not particularly fussy in what order I get to any of the above places, just want to work out which country is easiest and of course cheapest to get to Beijing from.

By flight or train? Where do you need to end up AFTER Beijing?

I don't really mind either. As I only have a month, I don't want to spend days on trains or buses, but having checked some flights on the internet, they seem really expensive.
Some one way flights from Singapore to Beijing were nearly $1700USD aaaaagggghhh. Can't afford that.

The route is really flexible. I will start in Singapore and end up in Singapore.
So Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Beijing and most probably Malaysia will be where I intend to go inbetween.

I have heard that Bangkok is the cheapest place to buy airline tickets???

Any help from all you well travelled gurus would be greatly appreciated.

You're pricing them on the wrong places and too early, that's why. Go to the travel agents in Singapore's Chinatown and you should be able to get a one-way to Beijing for around 400-500+ SGD at most, even if you're flying Singapore airlines! I think that's only <300 USD. Fly to Beijing and make your way down back to Singapore overland.
There're of course budget airlines but very limited destinations in mainland China (not including Hong Kong and Macau) -- currently only Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Haikou and Xiamen, all in southern China, which wouldn't be of much help to you. The last one would be via Bangkok on Air Asia, the others on Tiger Airways. I've heard that Air Asia is planning to fly to Hangzhou (a couple of hours from Shanghai by train) and Tianjin (1 hour from Beijing by bus/train) but no other word on those yet. Maybe they'll be up and running by the time you're travelling.

You can also find inexpensive airfare from Singapore to Shenzhen... then then domestic flights within China from SZ -> BJ are also quite inexpensive. (about $100-$150 US each way) Domestic airtickets in China don't really need any advance purchase can be bought at the airport for little premium. If you'd like to get it done in advance, then just stay in Shenzhen to explore a day or two and get your hotel to help to book your domestic flights for you.

Here is a great article on some of those great discount airlines in Asia that Ellyse mentioned - you can use them to explore the region on a budget!
