I think I'm begining to be a pest.
There are just TOO many places we would like to visit in Europe and we really have a hard time deciding where to go. We will be leaving for Europe in 2 weeks' time (guided tour - last stop will be Vienna) and would start our own 'adventure' on the 22 March 2007 which will last 4 days before we depart from Vienna again.
Our guided tour would include Budapest, Prague and Vienna and from Vienna we would like to see Germany (Munich) and if possible, another nearby country.
I urgently need your help on this:
(1) would it be wise to spend the whole of 4 days touring Germany, e.g. visiting all the bigger cities such as Munich, Berlin, Hamburg etc
or
(2) spend 1-2 days in Munich then travel somewhere else for another 2 days then retrack back to Vienna for our flight home in 4 days' time.
If so, what would be the Cheapest mode of transportation to get to all these places and should we fly or take a train? I know there's this skyeurope which sometimes give really good offer but again, the timing is very crucial as well.
Again, some of the train website is very difficult to book especially for us international travellers (non-europeans)... e.g some doesn't give the full fare, while others display only german language.... (FYI, we can only speak english!!)
PLEASE help.... thanks
Kathleen

From Vienna, go to Salzburg, Passau, Munich and Füssen, if you are set on Germany. (I personally still recommend going to Bratislava, but hey, it is your trip.)
Don't bother going up to Berlin, you would loose two full days if you travelled by rail. Plane would cost you a day.

with only 4 days...I wouldn't travel all of Germany...but as t_maia mentioned...I would spend some time in Munich and definitely visit Salzburg (the movie 'sound of music' was filmed here). While in Munich you could take a day tour of the castles...at least visit the Fairy tale castle...Neuscheweinstein (sp)...this is the castle mentioned/drawn on Disney fairy tales...its on a hill...so bring walking shoes!

I know that distance from Vienna is a factor, but in my opinion/experience, Prague is almost always a better choice than Bratislava! (if you're choosing that is)

It depends on how mant days you will be in Vienna already on the tour (you don't tell, so I am speculating a little bit). In my opinion Vienna is a city, that has a lot to offer. If the tour would spend two days in Vienna, I would stay another 2, to make the total of 4 days.
I would choose to go West (Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich). For getting tickets on a budget airline you are rather late, you should have booked those tickets, about 2 months before the trip, so Hamburg, and Berlin, seem to me to be too far away, for a visit on this trip.

Thanks so much for your ideas.
For our guided trip, we would have covered salzburg already and I believe we will be spending 2 days covering Vienna.
I wouldn't want to spend more time in Vienna as I have already visited Vienna last year on my own and would like to take this opportunity to see Germany.
I understand it is late for me to secure the cheap fare.. I can't help it as the airline has just confirmed our seats to travel back on the 26th march, which will only give me 4 extra days.
So I gather, I should go to Frankfurt and Munich skipping Berlin then back to Vienna.
Any idea if we should consider Stuttgart and Hamburg ? Should I travel by plane or train? Cheapest possible way would be which?
If I travel from Vienna, and if I need to cover these cities in 4 days, how many days should I spend for each city and what's there to see.
Thanks a lot for your help. Really appreciate them.
Kathleen

I have roughly sketched out a route for my trip from Vienna to Germany for a total of 4 days:
(1) Vienna - Fussen (via Munich) overnight train
staying one nite in Fussen (or is it better for a day-trip?) I tried to use Austrian train OBB. Is this correct? (Can't book the tickets! HELP??)
(2) Then Fussen - Stuttgart (staying one night)
This connection I try to use the German Rail "Die Bahn" but cannot book the tickets (?? HELP ??)
(3) Stuttgart - Munich (two nights)
I cannot book train tickets.
(4) Munich - Vienna (flying home same day)
I cannot book train tickets either.
Should I visit Fussen and Stuttgart and swap for somewhere else in Germany? I'm looking at all angles how to maximize the 4 days and of course, money (train or bus or plane).
i tried to book the train ticket on line but been having some problem. First & foremost, once you're in the booking page, it's all in a foreign language. I am stuck right there.
I urgently need you kind help. anyone please... as I'll be travelling in 2 weeks time. Your help and inputs are very very very much appreciated!!
Regards,
Kathleen

I guess it ahs been said before, and it's your trip, but have you considered visiting Bratislava for a day?
Salzburg is a nice city as well.
Does Stuttgart has much to offer?

Thank you.
I just realised that we will spending a day in Bratislatva and I certainly do not know if a day trip will do Bratislatva any justice or not
I certainly do not know if Stuttgart has anything to offer or not. Can anyone give some guidance on it? I busied myself with looking up the net for more information on both stuttgart and fussen and Munich. I hope I am gonna enjoy explore the cities and have a wonderful experience & memories.
cheers, Kathleen

With 4 days I would say it's not too wise to try and go to Germany. Better stay closer to Vienna. Here are some routes:
-Vienna-Bratislava-Budapest
-Vienna-Brno-Prague
-Vienna-Linz-Salzburg
There is no point of rushing through places...better enjoy!
