Walk down Khao San Road starting from Wat Chanasongkran towards Burger King, turn left and you will see lots of jewelry wholesalers. Also the Chatuchak weekend market is worth a look. For good, less touristy stuff, hit the alleys and roads parallel to Khao San.

I'll take a look at ghostdog's suggestion. I'll be in Bangkok on May 20 and 23.

I'm a little bit uneasy buying jewelry there since I cannot tell what's real from what's not. *embarass laugh*. Anyhow, many say that Johnny's Gems is one shop you could trust. It's in 199 Th Fuang Nakhon corner Th Charoen Krung. If I'm not mistaken this is somewhere near Wat Pho. You could get there by riding a air-con bus 508 or an ordinary bus 56. By the way, it's closed on Sundays.

My sister tells me that she was able to buy jewelry somewhere in Pratunam. It's on the 2nd floor of an airconditioned "mall".

Are there any other cheap jewelry shops you recommend?

If i am not mistaken, the airconditioned mall that you mentioned is Platinum. It is next to Pantip Plaza. Maybe you can try to have a look at the Thai Expo. I cant remember where is it located.

Chareon Krung Road, around the area of the Oriental Hotel, has a few silver shops.

Sampeng, Chinatown, has quite a few wholesalers.
