Does anyone know of any good companies or sites to get info on learning to dive out in Cairns?

I was in Cairns Feb '05 with the hopes of doing some diving. I was certified on Fitz Roy Island, which is just East of Cairns, maybe an hour ferry ride. They offer an introductory course, I think it was 3 days, once its completed you're set to go with an Open Water Certification. The island itself was pretty badass too..low key with great views and full of other travelers. Once back in Cairns we hooked up with some other local dive units and hit up the reef, it was absolutley amazing. Something about getting your scuba cherry popped on the Great Barrier Reef really sticks with you!! One of the best decision I've made. Enjoy!!

Deep sea divers den are good, cheap, but professional. Did most of my diving with them while i was there. Had no complaints.
Prodive are popular too, had a german roomate, and met an israeli girl who did their courses through them, did the basics and pool sessions in cairns, then stayed a few nights on the reef for the rest.

I've booked to do pro dive to get my PADI open water certificate, mid may for 5 days, costs around £279 for theory, pool based training, 2 nights stay on a dive vessel and think about 8 dives including a night dive, food on the dive vessel and a farewell dinner.

I went to a course with down under dive and I would not recommend them. The number of people in the group was too high so if you lack confidence at all or want to take more time over doing something they don't give you the time as they are just trying to get as many people through the course as possible (this may be the case of other courses too) I also had problems with my ears during the course and had to go to the doctors, although they took me there they just drove me there then left me even though I was clearly upset. I ended up not completing the course and when I emailed them to advise this I just received a rude reply - would not recommend them at all.
