Behind lock and key, if possible; I've sewn a tiny pocket in my boxershorts to keep the key. If there are no dependable lockers (never stay at a place that doesn't have those, apparently they don't care for your safety), a moneybelt is a good option, but that is kinda difficult with one's camera :)

If the hostel does not have a locker system, or one that is cheap enough, I usually put my money, credit cards, cell phone, and other small stuff in my pillow case when I go to sleep. I usually try to get a bottom bunk so i can keep my pack right under my bed near my head. When I get top bunks, I usually just sleep with my pack at the foot of my bed if I think I am going to have problems.

I also use the pillowcase method, but I have found that with my habit of tossing and turning and squeezing the pillow, the things I have in there tend to fall out. I now have a seperate, smaller pillowcase with a zipper that I use to place my valuables in and then stow it in the larger hostel pillow. The smaller pillowcase also has the advantage that I can stuff it with my fleece sweater - and voila, I've got a small travel pillow.

hey my solution is to put all my valuables in the bottom of my sleeping bag with me, and to sleep in a corner bunk if possible with pack shoved in corner.

I keep things mixed up. Some in the money belt. Others like camera I leave in my day pack and take that to bed with me facing the wall. Never had any problems with this method.
