Hello all,

On the 17th of March, I'm going to Hong Kong and want to visit Vietnam and Cambodia. My flight will be arriving and departing from Hong Kong.

I would like any advise if it is possible to do so in three weeks and what's the best, quickest and cheapest way to do it?

Is it better to do it overland or do I need to take any flights considering the distances and time? If I go from Hong Kong to Hanoi through China, which is the best and the cheapest way to travel? How long that will take me?

Thank for your advise and really need it.

I think in only 3 weeks it would be totally crazy to consider doing Hong Kong, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Vietnam itself deserves 3 weeks and more, Cambodia 7-10 days if you just wanted to see Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, China well you could travel there for years and not see everywhere worth seeing and well Hong Kon 5 days should be enough. I think you'd be better off just seeing Hong Kong and then seeing a bit of Mainland China (if you wanted to rush things you could go to Shanghai then get up to Beijing, do the Jinshaling-Simatai day hike along the Great Wall of China and then make your way back down to Hong Kong. At least doing something like that you'd only be cramming in one country that is very interesting instead of 3 which are very intersting and wouldn't be able to have much enjoyment at all when it is so rushed.

I agree with aharrold45. You are trying to do way too much in only 3 weeks. Here's a couple options though:

1. Spend 4 days in Hong Kong and head to Guilin for 4 days. Then south to the Vietnam border. Visit Sapa (3 days), Hanoi (4 days) and Halong Bay (3 days) and fly back to HK from Hanoi. Thats excactly 3 weeks and will be packed with fantastic places (many of my all-time travel highlights) to visit. I think this would be your best best.

2. Spend 4 days in HK, fly to Ho Chi Minh City (2 days). Do a Mekong tour (3 days), head to Phnom Penh (2 days), Sianoukville (3 days), and Angkor (3 days) from there you can fly back to HK, or bus it into Bangkok (which is just about as close as PP) for a flight back to HK. Alternatively, if you skip Sianoukville (which in my opinion isn't great) you could maybe take the time to go to Nha Trang and/or Dalat which in Vietnam. Maybe you can fly directly to Nha Trang from HK?

3. Spend the whole 3 weeks in China. The Southwest is fantastic and makes great 3 week loop.

4. Fly from HK to Hanoi and do a quick overland through Vietnam and fly back to HK from HCMC.

So basically, if you want to see all of these countries it will require alot of flying and probably more travelling than sightseeing. I would stick to an option that takes in less places that are closer together (option 1) so that you can maximize you time.
