My wife and i are heading to Carcassonne for 2 or 3 days at the start of July as part of our posponed honeymoon. We are looking for any advice on how long and where we should stay and if we should rent a car for our time there.

Hi, I am also thinking of going to Carcassonne sometime this summer possibly on my own. Just looking for general advice, tips, maybe budget places to stay, same as above poster really!

A car (or bike) is definitely good to get out into the country and into the foothills as public transport can be hit and miss.

Hamsterfox - Budget accom can be tricky to find. The only hostel type place that did exist (might be different now) was about 20km south of town although gets rave reviews. However there are a fairnumber of small guesthouses/hotels in the centre which if you are there reasonably early in the day, are easy enough to find a room in just by asking around. Some French is definitely helpful for that, although you should be ok with English

When I went I only stayed for 2 nights, but it was amazing. I stayed a the HI hostel right in the old city, but book ahead because it's almost always full.
I didn't really go into the new city so I didn't see much there, but there is a pretty good bus system in the city.
I would have liked to have a car because a few kilometres from the city is a cave that is supposedly amazing to visit..
