Hi there,
Around mid May this year I'm hoping to spend a few days in the city of Ljubljana, Slovenia. I'm going to travel by train from Trieste and possibly have a few days looking round before heading to Croatia and beyond.
Obviously, Northern Italy and Croatia are well travelled areas, and I've found plenty of information. Ljubljana is proving a little more allusive. If anybody could give me information on budget accomodation I would be really greatful.
Also, if anybody has visited this city (or just Slovenia in general) and can recommend some nice bars/ restaurants / etc, that would be great.
Cheers,
Crouchy

Hello Crouchy
Google hostels, Ljubljana.
Choose the one, in the city centre, beside the river.
It is the best place to stay, because u dont have to take any public transport, to get to it, after going out. Dorm beds cost around 20 euros per night
The night life is so good, in Ljubljana. I was there, in the middle of the week, one October. When I went back to the hostel, at 2 or 3PM, the bars and clubs I was at were still going. It must be fantastic, to be there, at the weekend.
If u like hard rock and heavy metal, go to the Orta bar. Also Metal Kova. What type of music do u like?

That place sounds interesting, Coldwarspy.
How much does it cost, per night?

Ljubljana is such a great place!
I went to a couple restaurants... one named Julya and another Lunch. They are right next door to each other. Julya had amazing food. I loved it! I also took a walking tour which was interesting - it included a little boat ride down the river. I got some great pictures from the top of the castle. Very lovely city!

Hostel Celica in Ljubljana is by far one of the best hostels in Europe. It is a former prison converted into a hostel by art students - staying in a "cell" with 3 beds will cost you ~20 euro. Their website: http://www.souhostel.com/
If you're travelling from Trieste, I would highly reccommend making a day trip to one (or all) of the following: Piran (beautiful coastal town), Bled (very scenic mountain lake with castle and island), or the Ć kocjan (or Postojna) caves. I can't recall, but the hostel may also organize trips to these locations...
Have a fabulous time in Slovenia!
