How busy is Cairns the last week in June, being it one of the better times to visit and all? Is there a school break that overlaps with this time?

I am just debating whether or not I should book a hostel such as Gilligan's or caravella's online or whether to simply just show up...(and yeah I know, my "Let's Go" Australia book sold me on these two).

Thanks everyone!

School holidays are generally around the last week of June and into early July. Cairns would be quite busy then because it is beautiful weather up North whereas down South it is winter. So yes I would advise booking and doing it as soon as you can. Fortunately most Aussies going that way for school holiday breaks will book into the resorts or motels so you should be right at a hostel or one of the many backpacker spots. Good luck and have fun.:)

Yeah you'll be for hostels....Gulligans can be a bit relentless so i hope your up for a party and caravella's is a little quieter and there 2 hostels are right on the esplanade so you can just walk out your door and crash by the lagoon after a heavy night out at the woolshed...
have fun

Gilligans is the party central hostel, can be pretty full on at times, as long as you don't need sleep it will be fine. The "Cairns beach house" was good, i ended up staying there for 3 months, it's within walking distance of beach/city, or they run a free bus in and back every hour from 7-3:30am, they've got a bar/resuarant there, and it's a lot quieter than the central hostels. bout $20 a night with free meal, it's kinda small, but u can upgrade it for a few dollars, or cook for urself in the camp kitchen.
