This may sound snarkey, but if you don't know what to do there, why are you planning to go?
There's definelty lots to entertain you for 3/4 days, though alot of it revolved around relaxing and not doing much more than strolling around town visiting temples. There is also a great waterfall to visit outside of town and some cave temples along the river that are quite popular.

Hi, if you have 3/4 days in Luang Prabang you can visit the waterfalls and there's also a temple cave place you can visit - can't remember what it's called but most taxis have the details on the side of them. You can also walk up to the temple which overlooks the town and there is the night market which is ace. You'll have plenty to do and see when you're there. There is also a wee cinema place you can visit where you hire a room and watch movies or play video games in the evening if you just want to relax and zone out for a couple of hours. I think for visits to the caves and waterfalls if you can book with more people it will be cheaper. Enjoy!

Main reason for question is can see the major touristy bits but have the option of extending the stay if worthwhile or shortening the stay and doing more elsewhere! Am splitting time between visit to Chiang Mai and Sukhothai. I enjoy the temples but dont want to just relax, want to be a verb instead! Jon

I was in Luang Prabang last year.. its an amazing little town. The waterfall is definitely worth a visit I recommend hiring a bike & riding out there, its a fair old trek but a great way to see the countryside. Also did a boat trip to the Pak Ou caves which were fairly interesting and you stop in a few local villages which was fun. Its worth it just for the boat trip, you get to see the local way of life from a different viewpoint. There are quite a few small tour operators in the town itself that will sort these trips out for you.
If your an early riser (like 6am), every morning the monks walk around the town collecting alms from the locals & also some tourists. Its a pretty spectactular site, I'm not really a morning person but so glad I got up to see it.
In the evenings there is a nice market, with some great food stalls and if you want some to go for drink I definitely recommend Hive Bar, super cool bar that does amazing cocktails!
I hope that helps a little, Luang Prabang is such a beautiful town I could of spent much longer there.
Have a fantastic time & safe travels
