I travelled around Vietnam last November and really enjoyed it. The food is really good, the locals are friendly, the shopping is great and the culture, history and politics of the country are fascinating.

We travelled with a tour group from Saigon to Hanoi, which I enjoyed as it took the hassle out of travelling and I also enjoyed the company of the other people on the trip. We went with a company called Intrepid which i found good.

However, travelling with a group isn't necessary as it is very easy to travel between the main cities by train independently. The trains are clean and efficient in my experience. The main motorway from south to north is also pretty good although I wouldn't recommend driving yourself as the Vietnamese drive like maniacs - the number of motorbikes have to be seen to be believed. However covering the whole country by road and rail is pretty tiring because Vietnam is a long, skinny country so if I was visiting again I'd definitely fly between cities. Once you arrive the different cities you'll find lots of local tour agencies which will bring you to visit sites out of town.

Although I enjoyed all of Vietnam Hanoi the capital and Halong Bay which is north of Hanoi were definitely the high lights - I'd recommend that you try to maximise your time there.

Enjoy it
