I'm new to the forum but I join specifically for these questions. I'm a bassoonist studying at a conservatory here in the US. I'm currently in my first year of Grad school, but have been having a lot of troubles with the administration and my major teacher becoming ill. Essentially I have no teacher.

Long story longer... I'm interested in continuing my studies in either Germany or Austria. I was wondering if anyone had any insight about music schools. Which ones are good? How's high is the level of playing? Also, I've heard of orchestra academies. What are they like? Do I have to pay for them?

Any information at all is appreciated. The language shouldn't be too much of a burden either, I've had two years of German in college.

it is very difficult to say for a non-musician which schools are good for you. Have you already tried to find out what schools are available in Germany or Austria?

If not, could get you started. The site will also give you an idea about studying in Germany - rules, regulations, visa, costs.

Searching quickly for "Studium Fagott" through Google I found:
Applications for Entrace Exams must be submitted by April 30th.
Applications for studying in October must be submitted until March 31st. Looking through their website, I found that they had the best options available for you, as they offer Master Classes and further studying. Best fill out your application NOW and email it to them at rektorat(at) Entrance exams are scheduled for second week of June, just hop on a plane, as a US citizen you can worry about visa and residency permit later.
For HFMDK Frankfurt you need to apply until April 15th if you want to start studying in October.
Application deadline for October: March 31st.
