Does anyone have any brilliant ideas for shipping a medium-large sized box of stuff from Ottawa (Canada) to San Francisco? What is the easiest/cheapest/safest way to do this?

I shipped some stuff from San Fran to Toronto once. Cost me about $200 DHL for a couple of big boxes of my clothes.

Unfortunately I apparently didn't label the boxes correctly, because the Canadian government thought that the boxes were full of NEW clothes, and charged me another $150 in duty! So becareful how you label what you are sending. Probably best to give our items a $1 value on the customs form (I've now learned).

Anyway, any courier company or even Canada Post should be able to facilitate this for you. Not sure how you could do this cheaper, unless you find someone flying or driving from Ottawa to San Francisco and ask them to take it for you (for a small fee). Maybe you could put up an ad at the University?

I don't know about this, but I was staying in a hostel in Sydney Australia and a Korean girl shipped her stuff home to Korea from Melbourne. I asked her who did she ship it with and she mentioned that she used a moving company. So that's an avenue to try, but I suppose it depends on how much stuff you've got. Though nowdays moving companies even ship our pets, so they might ship a few boxes of clothes.

Good luck and it'll be great to find out whether it is cheaper to ship by post or a freight company.
