Hi Peeps,

I'm heading to Oz with my boyfriend for 5 weeks, going to do the east coast Sydney to Cairns.

I've been thinking about booking with Oz Experience as they seem the most convenient and hassle free but someone has said just get the greyhound (but I've heard it's a bit uncomfortable). Has anyone out there done the OZ Exp bus trip/Greyhound?

And has anyone been to a small town called MacLean? I wouldn't mind going there as thats my surname (would nice to have a corney photo under the road sign for the family album, sad I know). But if it's 2 houses and a dodgy bar I might give a miss.

And also (I know I'm demanding but I'm so excited about the trip!) my boyf has to leave after the 5 weeks but I was thinking of going to NZ on my own for 3/4 weeks but scared I'll chicken out, any encouraging words? And has any done the Kiwi experience bus ride?

Hiya - this question gets asked quite often - check out the threads below:

It basically comes down to whether you want a boozy party trip, and are prepared to pay a bit more for not having to think about it, or would prefer to travel independently and don't mind making that little bit of extra effort to meet people yourself.

I did Greyhound and found it fine.

There are several national parks including rainforest, in the vicinity of MacLean (Scottish town), but probably a car would be necessary to take advantage. I think the north coast of NSW is picturesque with a number of wide rivers. I googled and came up with this site with pics: http://www.australia-in-pictures.com/maclean/index.htm.
The population is around 3200. In this size town, I'm sure you would find the locals friendly.

If you have the opportunity to visit NZ, go for it alone. You always meet more people and since there is no problem with language, you should have a great experience (take plenty of pics and make others jealous).

Thanks a mill for all you comments. (esp for going to the trouble of posting the links and chuffed about the MacLean info).

Swaying towards Greyhound now. Any suggestions of what type of Greyhound ticket to get from Syd to Cairns? I don't find the Greyhound website too clear. Should I get it by kilometers or the Syd to Cairns pass?

Also, I have a friend who travelled Greyhound last year and he said that on the overnight routes the bus driver made them get off the bus every 2 hours wrecking any chance of decent sleep and they were absolutely knackered.

Is this common practice or did he just get an awful driver?

Well every 2 hours is an exaggeration but if you take an overnight on Greyhound the chances are you'll end up getting off once in the night.
