I went to Pompeii, the last time I was in Naples Jax.
Fascinating place, even though I dont know much, about archaelogy.

No chance of me taking anything expensive, with me Clorin, because I dont own any expensive stuff.

I was last in Naples Nov. 2005, it really is a beautiful city with a bad reputation. I was with my family, who live outside of Naples, so perhaps I have a favorable impression for the reason that I wasn't singled out as an american. In all, it is worth a visit if you know how to get around Italy properly (aka speak the language and try your best not to stand out as an american).. otherwise, amalfi and sorrento are absolutely gorgeous and pompeii is certainly worth a visit for any history buffs (all are located around the bay of naples).. good luck!

Others will most likely pop in saying how great it is and it has no crime at all, but I will tell you my brief experience with Naples.

I stepped off the train and I got a bad vibe and felt the hairs stick up on my back. A few seconds later I witnessed one pickpocketting incident and a fight break out. Then before I had even left the station I witnessed another, so 2 incidents before even leaving the station. I then went for a walk about and as I was walking down one of the alleyways I had some scum of the earth person through a glass bottle at me from one of the units on an upper level. So if I had not been aware of my surroundings and actually looked up, I could have found myself in a hospital bed with glass in my skull or even worse killed from the incident.

All of these things happened within about an hour. In between that I was about 100 metres away from this building which was getting worked on (or should have been getting worked on) when I went to take a photo. This worker was lounging out the front on a chair probably on his break. I got yelled at and told not to take an photo of it (probably because he thought I'd publish it and the boss would see it so he'd lose his job for being a bludger). From the distance away I was, you wouldn't have even been able to recognise the man! So not only was the place crime ridden but some of its citizens were moronic.

This may not be the norm, but that is my experience, just the same as I felt nothing bad at all in Rome and felt perfectly safe even in the most touristy areas which others say have Crime. So others will claim Naples is perfectly safe, but my experiences say it is a place to avoid. They wouldn't name it the murder capital of Italy for nothing!

I ended up doing a day trip from Rome-Pompei-Naples due to what happened and that is a long day trip.

Goodluck and have a great trip in Italy.

I dont think I will stand out, as an American, because I am not American.;)

What u say makes me glad I am arriving by plane, and not by train. ;)

The address of the hostel I am staying in, is
Via Bellucci Sessa 22-portici, Naples 80055.
Does anybody know if this is a good area, or a bad one?

Just dropping in shortly to tell you that I'll be flying to Palermo on Tuesday and will be travelling to north in the general direction of Naples after that. I think I'll be there around the 10th/12th.

Wanna meet?

Yeah, cool T_Maia.
The 10th would be a good date to meet. Where?
I leave Naples, early in the morning, on 11th, so no time to meet, on that date.
U will be the first person from TP, that I meet in person.

Quoting Mel.

How rough and crime riddled, is it? If u have been there, what is your experience?
Is it as bad, as I have been told.
I am going there, next week.
I was there, around 15 years ago.
At the time, it was not any worse, than any part of Italy.
Has it deteriorated?

Hotels Naples
I lived in Rome for two years and the locals I worked with in Rome assured me that Naples is a different world compared to the rest of Italy if you wanted to stay and work there. But if you go there as a tourists its just like any other city in the world. You play by the rules and you will have a good time. No ice around your neck or other provocative things. To be a good tourist means to adapt to any location you might want to travel. This should be part of your vacation planning and thinking where ever you go. The one thing that I noticed strongly as a difference to other cities I visited before such as Florence and Rome, is that fact that Naples offers very few mid-range hotels and accommodations. That means you either go for the deluxe hotels or a totally budget, mostly hostels (often listed as budget or -snip). I think that in the past two years that might has changed a bit and any recommendations of recent Naples travellers are very welcomed.
Having worked as a receptionist in Rome I heart that all -snip are controlled by a few people and that makes it a bit tricky. buon viaggio thanks. T.

The big problem in Naples is that the government granted amnesty for a lot of the people that where caught for 'petty' thefts (pickpocketing), as these concentrate around the touristic spots in the town, it is advisable to be 'on alert' while you are there. Take the normal precausions: ask your hostel which parts of town to avoid, wear a moneybelt, read up on tactics used by pickpockets and use you common sense, and you should be ok.

The Amalfi coast is not that far, the same is true for Pompeii (if that is interesting to you), it's on the other side of the Vulcano.

Have a good trip.
