I was wondering if hitchhiking is easy between Sydney and Cairns, for 2 people.
We'll be traveling there end of May-beginning of June.

sure, it can be done easily enough....but it really isn't the safest way of travelling, although I'm sure you woulda heard that lecture before!! Really though, have you considered hiring a car and doing it yourselves? Then you have more control over everything, can stop when you want and don't have to wait in the rain for your next lift to come along. Think about it a bit more

I think it'd all depend on how much you are carrying on you as to how easy it'd be, because if you have got a load of stuff then people might be a little suspicious. Like on the Big Island in Hawaii it was meant to be so easy to hitch hike stick your hand out and within a few minutes someone would pick you up (that's what a couple of people said). When I missed the only bus of the day from Kona-Hilo and had to hitch hike 99 miles with my full 75 litre backpack and another small bag, hundreds and hundreds of cars passed me by on highways and all and I found it almost impossible to get a lift. It wasn't like I was dressed like a hippie, emo or goth which might scare some people, all I had was my big load of luggage and it wasn't like plenty of the cars weren't big enough. I think I must've walked 20 miles that day in between the 4 lifts (2 by the same people which took me about 40 miles) that I got. So if it weren't for the two guys from England who were working illegally that picked me up twice, I would have been really screwed. I think the same sort of thing would apply trying to do it from Sydney-Cairns with large amounts of luggage unless you managed to hook up with someone at a hostel in Sydney who had the same plans. It's also probably not the safest of places to be hitch hiking, but I guess something could happen anywhere you try.

watch 'Wolf Creek' lol. and I would say it would be near impossible to hitch the whole way from Sydney to Cairns. but it does depend on what you mean by hitching. you won't get anything roadside but you may meet some people in hostels etc.

Thank you all for your reply. I think we'll stick to the bus then.
