Hi all ! Can anyone recommend or give me some names of some good budget to mid range accomadation on the greek islands of Santorini or Mykonos? Also heard that it's better to get a place in town, and catch the bus to the beaches. Is this true? <am travelling end of July 07>

End of July could be quite busy, on Santorini cheaper places are often not near the good views, but you can walk. On Mykonos a lot of budget accommodation either in the town, near town or near the beaches, but it's a lovely place, just remember end of July it could be quite busy.

Was there last week (santorini island). Stayed in a small family hotel in Perissa. The girl who runs the hotel is really sweet and friendly (she got me drunk every night :-) The price for the night was 20 euro (at least that was the price for june, i dont know about july. But the hotel was really Very traditional, very cosy, and above all...very clean!(the first thing I look for when on holidays)
As far as Mykonos is concerned, its true that its better to stay in town rather than some beach. However, in Santorini that's not the case. Staying in Fira (the town) is very expensive and it takes you at least half an hour to get to a beach. That's why I suggest you stay in Perissa in Santorini. You're next to the sea, there is plenty of restaurants (tavernas), good nightlife and you can visit Fira or Ia (for the famous sunset) for a day trip. Everything at Fira or Ia is too expensive and tourist...made! There is also another beach in Santorini where you could stay (Kamari) but I wouldn't recommend it as it is ...packed by tourists. At least in Perissa, you get to see a few locals or greeks travellers (as myself) . Dont hesitate to contact me if you need some more information :-)
