so i was planning on buying a dslr cam for my trip to asia in november, i was planning on going with the nikon d40, what type of lens would be good to but, i have a prolly 1100 canadian to buy the cam some cards, lens and a case. so what kind of lens should i buy to pair up with the 18mm - 55mm lens that comes with the cam,

The 18-55 is a very, very cheap lens, and its quality shows it. See if you can get the camera body only, and then get the 18-200 VR with it (mostly because it's such an extremely useful lens), or, alternatively, get the 18-70 (which was the kit lens of the D70, but a rather superb example of what a kit lens can be, very good on the wide end (which is unusual for a zoom like that)) and then get some other zoom lens to go with it.
If you have money left over after that, the 50mm f/1.8 is a fabulously sharp lens for basically no money whatsoever. (Erm, although I'm not entirely certain it works on the D40... I assume so, but there were some types of older lenses which didn't have full functionality on the D40, that did work on everything else...)
