Hi, you should visit Acropolis as well as Plaka, Monastiraki and Thiseion for sure, that's in centre of Athens. To go swimming, nice choise would be Kalamaki and Glyfada (with the tram) or Varkiza Beach. It would be wise to take a boat from Pireaus (the port) to go a day trip to Aigina Island (1 hour away). You already have a place to stay in Athens? Feel free to contact me. Friendly greetings, Fotis

I spent a few weeks last year between the Islands of Serifos and Sifnos. Both are only about 3.5 hour by high speed ferry from Piraeus. Serifos is sparsely populated and has tremendous beaches. Plus you are not too far from Athens so that you spend all your time in transit.

On the Pelopponese, we had a wonderful time down in Monemvasia. Monemvasia has been called the "Gibralter of Greece", a wonderfully restored medieval town.

Another nice Idea would be Corinth and Loutraki (75-80km) from Athens, with lots of History and beautiful beaches;)

I would recommend a day trip to Delphi (catch the earliest bus as possible) for the history and setting and a day trip (catch the earliest bus as possible) to Cape Sounion with lunch at the taverna on the beach below the ruins.
I'm talking local buses, not pricey tour buses.
Aegina is probably the closest island to Athens being only 40 minutes from Piraeus (the port of Athens) by fast boat, but have heard that it gets overcrowded with Athenians on weekends.
