Me and two mates are planning a trip to L.A next year, traveling from the UK. I have searched the web, and couldn't find the awnser.

How old must you be to travel to America, and stay on your own for a week. Some people have told me 15+, others 17+ and others 21+

Could someone awnser, much appreciated.

Your best bet, and the most reliable source of information, would be to contact the The US Embassy in London. As you've already determined, the internet can be a full of incorrect rumours.

That being said, as I understand it, there is no minimum age to travel to the USA, but those under 18 should have a letter from their partner or guardian authorizing them to travel. But, of course, that's just what I think, and again you should really contact the US embassy (and your airline, as they might have requirements to let you fly as well) to understand.

I don't know the exact answer to this questions, but here are a few things you might want to take into consideration. Renting a car if under 21 is fairly difficult and definitely more expensive. You have to be at least 25 at most rental companies not to incur some kind of extra charge. Most hotels don't like to or won't let a room to someone under 18. Also, in general, having a true credit card as opposed to a debit card can save you a lot of hassle at times. I hope you find some of this useful:)

Car rental companies will not allow you to rent or drive if under 18. If you are under 25 but at least 18 as I suspect you are, you will incur on average $10-25.00 USD per day on the rental car. That rate depends on what state you are in and each rental company charges their rates slightly differently the last time I checked. In L.A. cabs will work but will be expensive. Also keep in mind that sales tax in L.A. is ~8.5%. Hope this helps!
