Most here will travel instate to see a relative or the like. They might go to Disneyland... Farm kids do not get vacations. They go to school in the winter and spend their summers on a tractor from about age 8 on. My mother learned to drive at that age, getting lunch in the Jeep for Grandpa. I remember growing up in Wolf Point, which is a very small farm community in the middle of nowhere. We had an assignment on the highlights of your life. A couple of the kids said they were able to go to Billings a couple of times. I had no idea before that how blessed I was.

While living in Italy for a while I see that a lot of Italians are travelling inside Italy, because you actually don't need to go anywhere else :D You can find everything - from mountains to beautiful beaches here.

No matter where you are in the world, there's always a reason to travel abroad. You definitely 'need to go' somewhere else if you want to see a tiger in the wild, Machu Picchu, Red Square, a desert, a different culture, although you might find penguins in San Marino or the Vatican (which are sort of in Italy) - see this thread.

I'm sure I saw "Pope soap on a rope" on sale in the Vatican. Not up there with penguins, but pretty good.

According to Denmark's Statistics Bureau, in 2016, most Danes headed to the following countries for vacations:
1. Spain (18 %)
2. Italy (10 %)
3. Germany (8 %)
4. France (6 %)
4. Sweden (6 %)
6. Norway (5 %)
6. Greece (5 %)
6. The UK(5 %)
9. USA (4 %)
10. Austria (4 %)
11. Turkey (3 %)

Overseas (not counting the US) Thailand, Australia and South Africa were popular choices.

The UK travel stats for 2016 advise that the top 10 countries for British holidays are all Europe except USA which is No 5.
The top is Spain and the others are France, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany & Greece, with No 10 on the list being Poland, which I'd guess is because of the large Polish population in the UK going back to see family etc.

In part, I'm sure you're right, but surely a lot of people go to Poland anyway. I must have been five or six times.

I guess they only know where we've gone to directly from a UK airport or ferry port, though. Most of my weird, out of the way destinations like Belize, Vanuatu, Taiwan have been via another country so I'm sure these statisticians are unaware.
