hi all, retuned from oz in march this year and i have just received a speeding fine $387!!!!!!!, however im sure i wasnt driving as it was a hire car and we all took it in turns to drive, there were 4 of us in total, and im sure it was a lad that was with us, but im not sure if he even has a licence!!!!, i had the car in my name (stupidy), i did say if anyone is caught speeding then they pay!, but this lad tom i dont have his address, and if i were in his shoes i wouldnt give it out, but i dont see why i should pay when it wasnt me driving, does anyone have any ideas?? also it says im suspended from driving for 6 monthes which wouldnt be a problem but im heading back out in october, so im keen to get this sorted! thanks dave

Man, that is a lot of money, what speed was that?
There was a thread a while ago by Purdy, but it was less money. I guess she paid, because you never know in Oz if you can enter the country. Really, I would pay, especially if going back pretty shortly.

Which state were you driving in?
On what date does your driving suspension start and on what date did the offence take place?
Here in WA, the fine for speeding between 30 and 40 km/h over the limit is $350, so somebody was a helluva leadfoot!!!
Over 40 km/h the fine is $1,000
I'll see if I can get any helpful info here for you.
If you aren't sure that one of the drivers even had a licence, thank your lucky stars that he didn't have a serious accident.
With your name on the hire document, you would probably be held responsible for allowing an unlicensed person to drive and that would not be nice.

thanks for the replies, it was melbourne victoria, it reads 'exceed speed limit in a vehicle other than a large vehicle by 35km/h or more but less than 40km/h' road rule 20 of the road rules-victoria-licence suspended from 7 july for 6 monthes, it also states i must send my drivers licence in to, but its a u.k one so do i still have to send that in? thanks again

O no, I would never send any other drivers licence than my international one I have, but even that one probably not.
I heard Victoria is one of the states where fines are highest and they control more. Was it within the build up area or outside? Probably on a major road. Actually the fine isn't that high for 35-40 km too fast
I am a little bit worried myself as well...I got back from Australia late April so might expect something within short notice as well...I had a brandnew Ford Falcon XR6 for rent and couldn't resist of course...although I used backroads for testing it. Oh well, at least I head fun, hope you did as well!;)

We got a speeding fine - cant remember the exact amount would need to search the threads to see - but it was in Victoria too. We werent going excessively over the limit (only 1km over the tolerated limit ie it was 76km in a 70km road and they usually turn a blind eye up to 75km so lve been told & those are only an example btw!)

We didnt have to send a licence just pay the fine online and that was that - as Utrecht said we paid up as we didnt want it hanging over us when we go back to Oz which we intend doing in the next 18 months or so!

We got back in late Jan and our fine arrived at the start of March so you are talking about 6 weeks for it to come through - Michael l reckon you are ok!

i got a speeding fine in OZ. the cops pulled me over and gave me the fine. I never paid it and as i continued to travel OZ, i had phoned home and my mum had mentioned a letter had came from OZ.

Basically they were sending letters to my home address with a fine similair to yours. and on the letter it said along the lines of that if i didnt pay it and i returned to the country again then thy would arrest me at the airport.

a few months later i flew over to New Zealand and then back to Australia.........and they let me in no problem.

I personally wouldn't pay it, its not like a serious crime or a huge amount of money they'l just write it off.

I see this sort of thing from time to time-throw the ticket away-Ocker laws have no force outside their country it's not worth the paper it's written on.
