Hi everyone
Ive been reading about the kerala backwaters and it seems like a really relaxing way to spend a fews days, floating down the river on a houseboat. I was thinking Aelleppey would be the best place for this?? Also i would love to hear of anyones experiences on these trips and also what are the houseboats like?
Also what others thing would you recommend checking out in Kerala?

Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,

As for Kerala in July/August it will be the moonsoon season. It rains a lot in this season. Kerala has its own beauty in August with the rains and the greenery all around. Also u can get accomodation and cruises for much discounted rates. There is a ashram in the backwaters, but i wont recommend u to that ashram, becoz that is mostly for elderly people. Moreover being alone avoid ashrams as these are full of people with perverted minds.
If ur travelling alone u can take the group cruises which have some 15-20 ppl on the upper deck of the boat, and are relatively cheap.
I advice suggest u to take the following route:
Arrive trivanduram: Stay for 2 days, first day visit the kovalam beach, veli tourist village, etc. Second day u can visit Kanyakumari and visit the rock memorial and Valluvar memorial which is at the confluence of three oceans.
Travel Trivanduram to kollam by road. Just near the bus stand in Kollam there is the boat jetty also and the District tourism office of Kollam from where u can choose a variety of cruises. The best thing would be to take a cruise to Allepy since u already have to go to Allepy. The cruise starts at 10 AM and takes 8 hrs to reach allepy passing through beautiful back water. there is a stoppage for lunch and tea on the way. the fare is mere $9. U reach Allepy in the evening. Stay overnight at Allepy and next 2 days u can enjoy cruising in and around Allepy like the Vembanad lake is beautiful. U can take a small motorboat and go for cruising.

Do let me know if u need more info

Cheers
Arif
