Hi Kylie,
I was in Thailand last year and managed to get my open water certificate in Ko Tao. Diving in Ko Tao is probably the biggest attraction of this Island and there are literally hundreds of dive school's to choose from. I went with Love Diving and paid 9000baht for the course and five days accomodation. The course takes four days so you get the room free for a day. I think I done six dives in total and couldnt believe that after four days I was qualified. The diving here is great and you see all kinds of fish, turtles and corals. There's one dive spot where you can see sharks but unfortunately due to the weather I didnt see any. I think that Ko tao is the cheapest place to do this in Thailand, but shop around because I was quoted a few prices ranging from 10000-15000baht.
hope this helps

Thanks Dave

sounds great ill look them up! i know there are so many websites for dive schools. i want one where i know ill see a bit of everything on the dives. im thinking of doing diving at the Similan Islands, however if i qualify cheaply at Ko Tao then make my way over to Khao Lak, ill be qualified and can go on a group boat trip to the Similan Islands to dive. Otherwise it would cost around 1700 Baht to do my certificate there instead of 200 baht to do three dives off a boat!
Once im qualified nothings gonna stop me lol, ill be going back year after year i sure.

i would def recomend Koh Toa, i spend new years there and did both open water and the advanced which i would recomend doing. I went with planet scuba which is a good sized school great instuctors. some are gettign too big like Ban's i would say is too big and doesn't become a personnal expirence. So go for planet scuba! koh Tao. The only prob you may have is the visability isn't the best in november in thailand. (10 times bette than the uk though) i believe the best time to visit there would be about april ish

KOOLKAZ, I have got my OWD certificate at Phuket in Dec, 2004 (just before tsunami).
I took this course from ScubaCat (www.scubacat.com) dive center (Patong beach). Good price, friendly staff. Also I done daily diving with WarmWaterDivers dive center, so I can recommend it too.
But if you want to dive at Similans islands, better start from KhaoLak (80 km North of Phuket). I took PPB course from Seadragon dive center (seadragondivecenter.com) in KhaoLak in November 2005 and got wonderful safari to Similans with this dive center.
