Hello all,
Just trying to sort out the South American leg of my round the world expedition. We are looking to camp in Cusco, Peru for a few days before we drive to Bolivia, we will have all the necessary equipment with us and would like to camp somewhere with beautiful views thats nice a peaceful, but not too far away from the city centre. I konw there isn't really many 'official' campsites in peru but just wondering if anyone knows a nice spot. Not looking for anything fancy, a toilet and shower close by would be nice, but we can cope with just a space if necessary.
Love to all x

There are some very good reasons why one should not camp near tourist highlights in SA;

  • Safety. Camping is just not safe. Cuzco is a big, but rather poor city, and campers are easy targets. You're asking for trouble if you try to do this
  • Another issue is responsible tourism. I usually pose as an environmentalist here on TP, but while camping out in the wild around Cuzco may be done responsibly in that respect, it is definitely not a responsible thing to do from an economical point of view. The tourist industry is about the only means of income for these people, and camping basically deprives them of it
  • A third is 'legal'; I would not be surprised if camping is not allowed, checks are frequent and fines are hefty, so the chances of being left at peace are really low.

In short, don't camp; take a hostel.

Happy travels,
Niels
