So I've been doing some internet research recently and have come to a few conclusions about the Aussie WHV visa available for American citizens:

1. It is only available through companies, i.e. BUNAC.
2. It is only good for 4 months, though it can be extended.
3. It costs $595 through BUNAC.

If you know any of the previous statements to be false, please tell me. IMO, this WHV visa sounds more like a scam for BUNAC than anything else. It's expensive, it's only for 4 months and you have to pay an additional fee to stay in the country after the 4 months if you want to travel.

So, are there any Americans that got a 1-year non-immigrant visa without being sponsored by a company? Were you able to get it in Sydney?

How tough are immigration officials about overstaying visas? Is under-the-table work rampant in the countryside as well as the city?

Has anybody received an Aussie working visa from a foreign embassy/consulate? I'm in Malaysia now, and will be in Jakarta Aug. 20.

Any advice is much appreciated.
