Hello!! Just wondering what is the best / cheapest way to travel around asia?? i.e. from country to country over a period of one or two months??
What is the public transport system like??
Is it cheap and easy to drive??

Hello Liosa:)

I take buses and trains and boats.
I have done this in China, India and Thailand.
I found it cheap and easy.
I never drove, so I am not sure what the quality of the roads are like and what the cost of driving is.

I've spent over 6 months in SE Asia (over 2 trips) and have used just about every means of travel you can think of-
cars, overcrowded large buses, private smaller buses, taxis, tuk-tuks and other similar morized bikes, "songthaew", motorbikes, trains, ferries, small boats, row boats, speed boats, large boats (Halong Bay) , kayak (in Laos from Vangvieng south to Ventiene), a few airplanes on selected travel between cities, and quite often my own 2 feet.

The variety of means of transport is quite amazing- I really can't think of a way I did not travel ( except maybe helicopter ), and all are quite inexpensive and reasonable for a backpacker. Public transportation is often very cheap and easy between cities - or often you can get "tourist ' type buses that are more for the tourists but also quite cheap. A few times in big cities I have even used public buses to get around- like in HCMC and Hanoi, and the subway in BKK and Singapore - all of which is also easy and cheap- but you often need a bit of help from locals to make sure you are going to the right place and getting off in time.

Personally I would not drive on my own- both because I would be afraid of driving on most Asian streets/ highways, and because getting someone else to do it for you is so cheap and easy...

Good luck

Canada Guy is right, there are are many different ways of getting around, and every country will have a different way that is the cheapest or most convenient. Which of the 50 or so Asian countries are you thinking of going? Narrowing it down a bit will help in giving you a response. The only all-encompassing answer I can give you that suits just about every Asian country I've visited is that driving yourself is a baaaaaaadddddd idea. It's often illegal too.

In Thailand, you might have to becareful if you drive.
Mostly in Southern and iisan area....
If they know that you are not Thai, you might in big trouble no matter if they are the 1 who knock you....
and if a motorcycle knock you while you are driving, you are still in the guilty side because in Thailand, small vehicles are always Right.....
If you knock into a lorry or bus, yea, they are guilty.....

that's true man! i met an old welsh bloke who was living in thailand and got into a crash with 2 motorbikes, even though the motorcyclists were racing each other and ploughed into the side of his car, he got done for it!!! scary stuff, but apparently the logic is 'If you weren't in the country they wouldn't have hit your car'
