Am off to NY with my man for a week in September. We're looking for reasonable prices but privacy and an en suite in a good location! Has anyone got any secret gems they can share re where we should stay? Ideally a hotel that isn't grim.

In New York its all about timing and location. If you want a private room I would try the Marrakech Hotel on broadway and 103rd. No matter what hotel you book try doing it through hotels.com. Manhattan is a crazy place and you may find some great last minute deals.
manhattan is a wee bit expensive when it comes to hotels. but there are apartments that people rent out for vacationers for 3 days or more. you can find some beautiful lofts in "trendy" brooklyn or large apartments in manhattan for half the price of a hotel. i can't find the website that i used. it was a while ago. but here are some other sites that i found in my emails...
